In the dying moments, pure elation broke out for Chelsea and caretaker boss Calum McFarlane as Enzo Fernández stabbed home a dramatic equaliser. The goal left Pep Guardiola in a state of despair and gifted the temporary Chelsea manager a career-defining moment. On paper, Guardiola versus McFarlane represented the Premier League's most pronounced managerial mismatch in class, making the memory of Fernández's crucial intervention one to cherish the 40-year-old for years to come.

A Stark Contrast in Pedigree

On the home bench stood the era's defining coach, a man with four decades of silverware for football's giants Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City, overseeing his 1,012th match. In the opposite technical area, was a former coach at lower-league sides Croydon and Whyteleafe, who had served in City's own academy and arrived to make his first-team debut after being seconded from his regular role overseeing Chelsea's youth teams.

Factoring in a slew of absences, most notably Chelsea's important midfielder Moisés Caicedo (suspended) and goalkeeper Robert Sánchez (injured), McFarlane's task started out as a mission that seemed Mission: Impossible.

The initial challenge at City's fortress is to avoid an early goal, as a rout can swiftly follow. An early Chelsea defender header clear from a corner indicated the visitors' goal was under siege immediately, yet McFarlane's side proved resilient throughout the encounter.

Another element of his blueprint was to disrupt at every turn. Jeers rang out whenever Chelsea slowed at a set-piece, a sure sign the City's tempo was being disrupted and the Guardiola plan was being thwarted.
