A bettor earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, leading to inquiries about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and made four bets, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Platform data shows that traders estimated the likelihood of a political change at just 6.5% in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the market's assessment had increased to 11% by shortly before midnight and surged in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a sharp shift in positions just before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," stated Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other individuals also profited large payouts from bets on the same outcome.

Legal Questions Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on recently aims to prohibit public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to predict everything from sports to political events.

The industry faced scrutiny under the last presidential term. But it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the stock market, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting space.

A spokesperson for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
